Cumberland and Smithfield are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Clippers are taking a road trip to take on the Sentinels at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Last Friday, Cumberland didn't have quite enough to beat St. Mary Academy-Bay View and fell 5-4.

Meanwhile, Smithfield gave up the first runs last Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over Scituate. The win continues a trend for the Sentinels in their matchups with the Spartans: they've now won four in a row.

Maddie Bose made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Smithfield got a massive performance out of Ava Lopez, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Lopez a new career-high. Joy Matteson was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3.

Smithfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Smithfield now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Cumberland, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Cumberland skirted past Smithfield 7-5 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Clippers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
