With a playoff win on the line, Northwestern rose to the challenge on Friday. They took down the St. Brendan Sabres 89-73. The win was familiar territory for the Bulls who have now won 12 games in a row.

Northwestern was led to victory by Calvin Russell Jr. and Jamiro Smith. Russell Jr. dropped a double-double with 25 points and ten boards, while Smith went 7 of 8 en route to 16 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Smith's morning made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Giovanny Desire was another key player, putting up seven points.

Northwestern was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. They racked up six more assists than St. Brendan's also-impressive total of 14.

When it comes to explaining why St. Brendan lost, don't look at Jonas Duque. Despite the final result, he went 10 for 21 on his way to 30 points in addition to six assists and five boards. Those 30 points gave Duque a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Benny Fragela, who posted 22 points.

Northwestern's victory bumped their record up to 22-3. As for St. Brendan, their defeat dropped their record down to 18-8.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Northwestern will take on Somerset Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Somerset Academy's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five contests. As for St. Brendan, they will challenge Suncoast at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Suncoast will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something St. Brendan surely won't give up without a fight.
