Baseball Recap: Itasca Snags Eighth Win in Last Nine Games

Itasca barely beat Meridian the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Wampus Cats were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Yellowjackets on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Wampus Cats, who have now won 11 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Maddox Abrego made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Abrego was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

In other pitching news, Itasca got a great performance from Gage Bassett as he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. What's more, Bassett posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.

Back at the plate, Aydan Villarreal and Caden Littlejohn did most of the damage at the plate: Villarreal scored two runs while going 2-for-3, while Littlejohn went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That's the most hits Villarreal has posted since back in May of 2024. Brayden Mears was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Itasca has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-3 record this season. As for Meridian, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.

Itasca will face off against Venus at 7:00 p.m. on the 24th. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.43 runs per game on average), something the Wampus Cats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Meridian, they will square off against Italy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
