Basketball Recap: Madelynn Matelic and Hayli Clampitt Secure Win for Speedway

Speedway hadn't done well against Covenant Christian recently (they were 1-7 in their previous eight matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Sparkplugs came out on top in a nail-biter against the Warriors, sneaking past 52-49. Surprisingly, this marked the Sparkplugs' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Leading Speedway to victory were Hayli Clampitt and Madelynn Matelic. Clampitt dropped a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Matelic dropped a double-double with 15 points and 15 boards. The dominant performance also gave Clampitt a new career-high in field goal percentage (89%). Aubree Loyal also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Covenant Christian lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Isla Haffner, who posted 14 points. Abbey Jankowski was another key player, putting up 13 points.

The victory got Speedway back to even at 3-3. As for Covenant Christian, they dropped their record down to 3-5 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Speedway will take on North Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Covenant Christian, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Indianapolis Scecina Memorial at 7:30 p.m. on the 5th.
