Baseball Recap: Holton Comes Up Short

Holton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of the Ravenna Bulldogs. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-0 on Tuesday.

Fisher Mirkle was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. Those two hits allowed gave him a new career-low. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two doubles. He has become a key player for Holton: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least three hits, but 4-9-1 otherwise.

Mirkle wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Luke Urso, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Tyler Pritzl also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Holton's defeat dropped their record down to 7-10-1. As for Ravenna, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-2 record this season.

Holton will be playing at home against Fremont at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Ravenna, they are taking a road trip to face off against Morley Stanwood at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Mowhawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.59 runs per game on average), something the Bulldogs will no doubt try to take advantage of.
