Basketball Recap: Manzano Snaps Four-Game Streak of Wins at Home

Manzano suffered their biggest loss since February 3, 2024 on Thursday. They came up short against the West Mesa Mustangs, falling 65-44. The Monarchs were not able to make up for their defeat to the Mustangs from their previous meeting back in December of 2023.

Several Monarchs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Zaria Gomez, who posted 15 points along with five boards and five steals. That was a full 34.1% of Manzano's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Daira Solis, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Monique Sena was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 17 points and ten assists for West Mesa. Sena has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Jaylin Varela, who had eight points in addition to eight boards and three steals.

Manzano's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-7. As for West Mesa, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season.

Manzano didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 60-46 win against Atrisco Heritage Academy on the 18th. As for West Mesa, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 64-63 victory against Highland on the 18th.
