Basketball Recap: Hailey Burgess' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wren over Laurens

Wren was the 57-36 winner over Laurens when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Wren Hurricanes fell just short of the Laurens Raiders by a score of 50-47 on Friday.

Wren lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Hailey Burgess, who posted 14 points along with six boards and three steals. Another player making a difference was Emma Kate Garrison, who had six points and eight assists.

Even though they lost, Wren smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Laurens' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Zoe Young led the charge by dropping a double-double on 20 points and 16 rebounds. Young has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 23 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nyri Allen, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds.

Wren dropped their record down to 14-7 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Laurens, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-11 record this season.

Wren will take on Southside at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wren is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.8 points per game this season. As for Laurens, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 40-31 win against Clinton on the 1st.
