Basketball Game Preview: St. George's vs. Piedmont Academy Cougars

St. George is 2-8 against Piedmont Academy since November of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. St. George's will square off against the Piedmont Academy Cougars at 5:30 p.m. St. George's is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.1 points per game this season.

St. George's usually-dominant defense will be looking to make up for Friday's struggle, when Fullington Academy offense got past them. St. George's received a blow on Friday as they fell 64-50 to Fullington Academy. The loss put an end to St. George's undefeated start to the season.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Jules Gotell, who posted 16 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Knoxie Burson, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, St. George's smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Piedmont Academy entered their tilt with Tattnall Square Academy on Tuesday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They came out on top against the Trojans by a score of 70-62. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 98th, while the Trojans are ranked 202nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Piedmont Academy pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.8 points per game. As for St. George's, their loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 10-1.

St. George's took a serious blow against Piedmont Academy in their previous meeting back in January of 2024, falling 60-20. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Piedmont Academy's Marissa Holder, who dropped a triple-double on 11 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.
