Northland Prep Academy and St. Johns are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Spartans are taking a road trip to face off against the Redskins at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Northland Prep Academy has given up an average of 10.7 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Northland Prep Academy couldn't beat Kingman Academy on Monday even though they stacked five runs on them in the fifth inning. The Spartans fell 13-10 to the Tigers. The loss continues a trend for the Spartans in their meetings with the Tigers: they've now lost six in a row.
Colson Skersick was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Skersick was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Blayden Cosper made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Dylan Stoffers was another key player, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, St. Johns might've scored the first runs on Friday, but it was Pima who claimed the real prize. The Redskins fell just short of the Roughriders by a score of 6-5.
Like Northland Prep Academy, St. Johns also got a great game from a two-way player: Brennon Leslie. He struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). Leslie has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Leslie wasn't the only one making solid contact as eight players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was T Platt, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
St. Johns' defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-11-1. As for Northland Prep Academy, their record is now 6-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Northland Prep Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Johns struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Northland Prep Academy came up short against St. Johns in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, falling 5-0. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
