Baseball Game Preview: Friona Chieftans vs. Tulia Hornets

The Friona Chieftans are taking a road trip to face off against the Tulia Hornets at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Friona has struggled recently with four losses in a row, while Tulia will arrive with four straight wins.

Friona saw some tournament action on Friday. They came up short against Seminole, falling 14-1. The contest marked the Chieftans' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Friona saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Abram Rocha, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Aiden Tafoya also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Meanwhile, everything went Tulia's way against Non Varsity Opponent on Saturday as Tulia made off with a 7-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.

Jarvis Pestrana was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now stole at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

In other batting news, Xavier Ortiz and Jacob Trevino did most of the damage at the plate: Ortiz scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1, while Trevino scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in both of his plate appearances.

Tulia's record is now 7-2. As for Friona, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-7.

Friona might still be hurting after the 20-9 loss they got from Tulia in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Friona avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
