League recap: West Craven wins, gets boost in standings

West Craven was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from sixth to third in 3A Conference 17. Earlier in the week, the Eagles defeated West Carteret 43-17.

Richlands moved up to 207 from 240 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Wildcats climbed the ranks as a result of falling to Havelock 28-16.

The Patriots' offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. On the ground Tyrell Johnson contributed 84 yards.

West Carteret's dynamic duo of Rodney Mitchell and Jake Freeman proved tough for West Craven to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.

Chris Phipps was a passing and rushing force as Swansboro lost to Jacksonville. He completed 5 passes for 88 yards and also ran for 75 yards. Phipps' favorite target this week was Markuise Hemby, who caught 2 passes for 47 yards.

Hemby was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Pirates lost to the Cardinals. The 5-foot-9 sophomore.

The Rams' Travis Sabdo and Michael Bowman led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Sabdo has thrown for 930 yards this season, while Bowman, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 18 catches for 337 yards. Elijah Harris from White Oak leads the league in rushing with 721 yards.

The top two teams in 3A Conference 17 will face off this week when first place Havelock takes on second place Jacksonville. Last week, Havelock beat Richlands, while Jacksonville topped Swansboro.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Jim Bryant's team takes on Beau Williams' team. The Rams have allowed 50 points this season, while the Cardinals have given up 65. Havelock allowed 16 points last week as it bested Justin Snider's team.

The Rams added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Wildcats, 28-16. The win marks sixth in a row for the Havelock.
