Baseball Game Preview: Southwestern Heights Mustangs vs. Elkhart Wildcats

The Southwestern Heights Mustangs will venture away from home to square off against the Elkhart Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Southwestern Heights has given up an average of 7.8 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Having struggled with three losses in a row, Southwestern Heights turned things around against Stanton County on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out the Trojans 13-12.

Jackson Stanfield was incredible, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Southwestern Heights is undefeated when Stanfield posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-5 otherwise. Wyatt Friessen was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Southwestern Heights kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

While Elkhart didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-9), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Springfield with a sharp 15-4 win on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won five matches by six runs or more so far this season.

The victory made it two in a row for Elkhart and bumps their season record up to 8-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for Southwestern Heights, their record now sits at 7-5.

Southwestern Heights skirted past Elkhart 9-8 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
