High school basketball: John Marshall reclaims No. 1 spot in MaxPreps Top 25 following Paul VI loss

Previously top-ranked Panthers drop after upset loss to Sidwell Friends.

An eventful week of high school basketball created some havoc within the MaxPreps Top 25 as John Marshall (Richmond, Va.) reclaims the top spot following a shocking loss from previous No. 1 Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.). The Panthers suffered their second loss of the season Sunday against Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) in their final game of the regular season to drop two spots to No. 3.

Duncanville (Texas) moves up one spot to No. 2 after completing the 2022-23 season with a record of 29-1. The Lone Star State powerhouse is barred from the state tournament this season because of UIL sanctions.

Southern Section Open Division pool play in California continued to shape the rankings as previous No. 8 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) dropped six spots to No. 14 after falling to St. John Bosco (Bellflower) and previous No. 10 West Ranch (Valencia) fell seven spots to No. 17 following a loss to Harvard-Westlake. No. 5 Centennial (Corona) battles St. John Bosco for the title Saturday.

No. 4 Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.), No. 9 Ben Davis (Indianapolis) and No. 12 West Linn (Ore.) are the only three teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 who have yet to complete regular season play.

Reclaim the top spot in the MaxPreps Top 25 after closing out the regular season with a 100-58 victory over St. Christopher's (Richmond). The Justices begin postseason play against Prince Edward County (Farmville) tonight in the Class 2 Region A quarterfinals.

Closed out the season with a 75-69 victory over Mansfield Legacy (Mansfield) paced by 19 points from Arizona signee K.J. Lewis, 16 points from Texas A&M Commerce commit Evan Phelps and 14 points from Texas signee Ron Holland. The Panthers will not have an opportunity to strengthen their resume in postseason play after the UIL ruled they would be ineligible for the postseason this year.

Suffered its second loss of the season in a stunning 75-68 upset against Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) despite receiving 18 points from junior Ben Hammond and 16 points from Maryland signee Deshawn Harris-Smith. The Panthers look to bounce back in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament this weekend.

Notched a blowout victory over Albany Academy (Albany) 93-56 paced by 20 points and eight rebounds from junior Godswill Erheriene along with 19 points and five rebounds from Connecticut signee Jayden Ross. The Crusaders close out regular season play next weekend with three NIBC contests.

Finished CIF Open Division Southern Section pool play 3-0 with wins over Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 68-63, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 83-63 and Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 73-55. The Huskies take on St. John Bosco (Bellflower) Saturday in the CIF Open Division Southern Section title game.

The Panthers' season came to an abrupt end last week after the Camden City School District removed the team from the NJSIAA state tournament following an on-court scuffle. Five-star Kentucky signee D.J. Wagner ends his high school career with 2,040 points and a record of 94-5.

Face Murrell Dobbins Vo-Tech (Philadelphia) tonight in the Philadelphia Catholic League semifinals after defeating Martin Luther King (Philadlephia) 83-34, Central (Philadelphia) 74-32 and Samuel Fels (Philadelphia) 79-17 in their previous league tournament contests.

Tip off state tournament action with a matchup against Bowie (Arlington) tonight. Due to Duncanville being barred from competing, the Wildcats are the favorite to capture the title in the Lone Star State's highest classification.

Two regular season contests remain prior to the start of postseason competition for the Giants. Ben Davis opens IHSAA Class 4A Section 11 play with a showdown against Southport (Indianapolis) on March 1. Valparaiso commit Zane Doughty (13.2 points), senior Clay Butler (9.8) and senior Sheridan Sharp (9.8) lead a balanced offensive attack that sees seven players average five or more points.

Opened their Class 7A state title defense with a 66-27 victory over Western (Davie) in the first round paced by 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists from top-ranked sophomore Cameron Boozer. The Explorers take on Doral Academy (Doral) tonight in the second round of the state tournament.

Picked up a pair of impressive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference victories last week, defeating Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.) 75-67 and Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) 51-46 to finish the regular season with two losses in conference play. The Cadets will be the No. 2 seed in the WCAC tournament this weekend.

Two games remain in regular season play as the Lions take on Tualatin tonight before traveling to Oregon City on Friday. West Linn is favored to win the program's first state championship since winning four straight from 2013 through 2016.

Began Class 6A state tournament play with an 82-47 victory over Dobie (Houston) spurred by a balanced effort as juniors Kayde Dotson and Clarence Payia each contributed 16 points while Washington signee Wesley Yates III chipped in 15 points and Prairie View A&M football commit Trealyn Porchia had 14 points.

Split a pair of games in CIF Open Division Southern Section pool play, falling to St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 62-55 before bouncing back with a 59-50 victory over No. 16 West Ranch led by a game-high 18 points from four-star Brady Dunlap. Although the Wolverines do not advance to the CIF Open Division Southern Section title game, they are expected to be a shoe-in for the CIF Open Division state tournament.

Four-star Baylor signee Robert Wright III led the way with 36 points while senior Sultan Adewale chipped in 23 points and 10 rebounds in an 86-61 victory over Archbishop Carroll (Radnor) 86-61 in the Philadelphia Catholic League quarterfinals. The Saints battle West Catholic (Philadelphia) tomorrow in their semifinal showdown.

Top 50 Illinois signee Amani Hansberry was named Baltimore Catholic League MVP after averaging 17.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 63 percent from the field to guide the Gaels to the BCL regular season title with a record of 13-1 in league play.

The Wildcats went 2-1 in CIF Open Division Southern Section pool play after defeating St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 55-53 and St. Bernard (Playa del Rey) 79-58 before falling to No. 14 Harvard-Westlake 59-50. While West Ranch does not advance to the CIF Open Division Southern Section title game, they are likely to earn a spot in the CIF Open Division state tournament field.

Captured the Union County Tournament championship with a 64-55 victory over Linden paced by a game-high 17 points from four-star North Carolina signee Simeon Wilcher. The Lions open state tournament play with a matchup against Koinonia Academy (Plainfield) tomorrow.

Captured the Bergen Country Jamboree title with a 71-49 victory over Bergen Catholic (Oradell) behind 15 points apiece from five-star junior Dylan Harper, senior Noah Barnett and sophomore Brady Loughlin.

Five-star sophomore Koa Peat dropped a game-high 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 79-60 victory over Liberty (Peoria) in the Open Division state quarterfinals. The Pumas face Desert Mountain (Scottsdale) on Friday in their semifinal showdown.

Head coach Rob Smith looks to close out his impressive career with another state title as his team returns to the court tomorrow to take on Solorio (Chicago) in the Class 3A Regional semifinals. The Wolverines had an 11-day layoff after capturing their 11th Chicago Public League title.

Escaped with an 80-78 victory over Omaha Westside (Omaha) to close out the regular season paced by 21 points and six rebounds from senior Jaxon Stueve and 18 points and six assists from Creighton signee Josiah Dotzler.

Open the NCHSAA Class 3A state tournament with a matchup against St. Stephens (Hickory) tonight. The Vikings have won 56 of their past 57 games dating back to the start of last season with their last loss coming to in the state semifinals in 2021-22.

Advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 75-60 victory over Woodmont (Piedmont) guided by 18 points from senior Jamarcus Wilkins and 16 points from junior Christian Andrews.

Take on Couer d'Alene in the Class 5A Region 1 title game following a 73-33 win over Post Falls in the semifinals. Top 100 Virginia signee Blake Buchanan was recently named to the USA team for the Nike Hoop Summit.
