Baseball Recap: Reed Gets the Win

Reed took a 15-run loss the last time they faced off against Spanish Springs, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Raiders sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 win over the Cougars on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Raiders have posted against the Cougars since March 21, 2024.

Ryan Vanek made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Reed is 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 9-12-1 otherwise. Vanek was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since April 2nd.

In other batting news, Chase Spencer and Braxton Liguori did most of the damage at the plate: Spencer went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI, while Liguori went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double. Reed is 8-3 when Liguori posts two or more runs, but 5-11-1 otherwise. Gage Burns was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.

Reed was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. They are 3-1-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Reed's win bumped their record up to 13-14-1. As for Spanish Springs, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-13.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Reed is set to take on their familiar foe Reno at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Spanish Springs will challenge rival Douglas at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing is sure in the Cougars' favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while the Tigers have been banged up by four consecutive losses on the road.
