Softball Game Preview: Appomattox County Raiders vs. Alleghany Cougars

The Appomattox County Raiders will square off against the Alleghany Cougars at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Appomattox County will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.

Appomattox County is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Altavista with a sharp 8-1 win on Friday. That's two games straight that the Raiders have won by exactly seven runs.

Paisley Mann spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Sydney Bryant was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Regan Sheilds, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Alleghany faced Rustburg in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Cougars came out on top against the Red Devils by a score of 8-3.

Alleghany's victory was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Appomattox County, their victory bumped their record up to 5-1.

Everything went Appomattox County's way against Alleghany in their previous meeting back in June of 2021, as Appomattox County made off with a 14-1 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Raiders since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
