Softball Recap: Union City's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

Union City's game on Thursday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Elmwood Park Crusaders with a sharp 12-2 victory. Considering the Soaring Eagles have won four contests by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Zaylee Vargas made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits. Vargas was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Natalia Montenegro was a standout: she went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since April 1st. The team also got some help courtesy of Zo? Mays, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

Union City moved to 4-9 with that win, which also ended their five-game losing streak. As for Elmwood Park, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Union City will venture away from home to face off against Hoboken at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Elmwood Park, they will head out to square off against Butler at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
