Softball Preview: HCYA vs. St. John's Mavericks

HCYA has gone 8-1 against St. John recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. HCYA will take on the St. John's Mavericks at 4:00 p.m. HCYA is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.

HCYA proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by eight) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Incarnate Word Academy 9-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory HCYA has posted since January 28th.

Kiran Kyham was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bijan Ali, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

HCYA was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .476. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .455 or higher in six consecutive games.

While St. John's didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past First Baptist Christian 16-1 on Saturday. Considering the Mavericks have won four matchups by more than eight runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Sophie Phillpott was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. That's the fewest hits she has allowed since back in March of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run.
