Basketball Recap: Gateway Comes Up Short

Gateway was the 66-36 winner over Bishop Verot when they last played one another back in February of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. The Gateway Eagles took a blow against the Bishop Verot Vikings on Thursday, falling 72-41. The contest marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Despite the loss, Gateway still got an impressive performance from Christopher Davis, who posted 18 points in addition to eight boards and three steals. Davis has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Anjay Boyd, who had four points in addition to seven boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Gateway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Bishop Verot's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gavin Williams led the charge by going 10 of 19 on his way to 24 points along with seven assists and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Austin Leslie, who went 9 of 12 on his way to 24 points and eight boards.

Gateway's loss was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-3. As for Bishop Verot, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-0.

Gateway didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 81-63 win against Fort Myers on the 10th. As for Bishop Verot, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 29-28 victory against Community School of Naples on the 9th.
