Basketball Recap: St. Petersburg Falls to Tampa Catholic in First Game of Season

St. Petersburg had to start their season on the road on Tuesday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They were dealt a 71-30 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Catholic Crusaders. The Green Devils were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-16.

Despite the loss, St. Petersburg saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Shaw Summer dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds. Summer is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down ten or more in each of the last 14 games she's played dating back to last season.

Tampa Catholic's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ashley Knox, who went 10-for-20 to rack up 30 points and five rebounds. Those 30 points gave Knox a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kelsey Sharpe, who shot 88% from the field on her way to 18 points along with seven steals and five assists.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Petersburg will take on Keswick Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Tampa Catholic, they are packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will challenge Evangelical Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
