Baseball Recap: Mercer County Comes Up Short

Mercer County managed to slip by Orion the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Golden Eagles came up short against the Chargers on Monday, falling 8-1. The Golden Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Chargers earlier this season, when they won 3-1.

Kevin Wilkens was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run over 5.2 innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent over his last four matchups.

On the hitting side, Mercer County saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carson Boelens, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Boelens has become a key player for the Golden Eagles: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 8-15 otherwise.

Mercer County has been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 14 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-16 record this season. As for Orion, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 16-12.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mercer County will host Princeville at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Orion, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Sherrard at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
