Recap: Somerset Academy South Homestead Hurricanes vs. Southridge Spartans
After a string of three wins, the Somerset Academy South Homestead Hurricanes's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell 60-52 to Southridge. While losing is never fun, Somerset Academy South Homestead can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 169th, while Southridge is ranked 43rd).
Somerset Academy South Homestead lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Joann Barnes, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Barnes pulled down eight or more rebounds. Justice Sheppard was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.
Somerset Academy South Homestead's defeat ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-5. As for Southridge, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 11-5.
Somerset Academy South Homestead will play host again and welcome Palmer Trinity, where tip off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. That game will pit two of the most dominant players against one another: Jade Leon and Sheppard. Southridge will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Lourdes Academy at 5:00 p.m. on January 18th.
