Softball Recap: St. John's Extends Winning Streak to Three

St. John barely beat First Baptist Christian the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The St. John's Mavericks were the clear victor by a 16-1 margin over the First Baptist Christian Warriors on Saturday. Considering the Mavericks have won four contests by more than eight runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Sophie Phillpott made a splash while hitting and pitching. She pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. That's the fewest hits she has allowed since back in March of 2024. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in RBI.

In other batting news, Ally Hong was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Yutia Li, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2.

The victory (which was St. John's third in a row) raised their record to 4-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for First Baptist Christian, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Coming up, St. John's will welcome HCYA at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for First Baptist Christian, they will take on Cooper in a tournament on Saturday. First Baptist Christian has given up an average of 12.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
