Baseball Recap: Flushing Comes Up Short

Flushing extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 14 on Monday, dropping them down to 0-10. They came up short against the Newtown Pioneers, falling 18-0. The contest marked the first time this year in which the Red Devils were not able to get on the board.

As for Newtown, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games.

For Newtown's part, Joseph Ramirez tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Ramirez has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Pedro Del Toro Sanabria was a standout: he got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Cristian Contreras Ortega, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

While Flushing had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
