League recap: Pena overpowering for Corona in past week

Big VIII league recap: 5/21/12

Big VIII's top pitcher this week was Corona's Daniel Pena. He won one game and struck out 16 batters.

With a big week, JW North jumped into the top 25 in the state rankings. JW North moved up from No. 28 in the state all the way to No. 13 thanks to a 1-0 record over the past week. Led by manager Steve Madril, the Huskies are ranked No. 92 in the nation with an overall record of 25-5.

The Panthers' pitching was especially stingy this week, allowing 38 hits and 13 walks to lead the league in both categories. On the season, Corona has allowed just 187 hits, while striking out 162 batters. Pena leads Corona with 59 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched.

The Panthers' Derek Robison led the league with seven hits this week. He is eighteenth in the league with 23 hits this year, and has a .343 batting average.
