Preview: Dixie Hornets vs. Whitmire Wolverines
Dixie is 10-0 against the Wolverines since February of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Dixie Hornets will head out on the road to take on the Whitmire Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. Dixie knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past ten games -- so hopefully the Wolverines likes a good challenge.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to post ten more assists than your opponent, a fact Dixie proved last Tuesday. They came out on top against Ware Shoals by a score of 61-48. Given Dixie's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 115th, while the Hornets are ranked 254th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Dixie's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kadin Stoll led the charge by scoring 21 points along with six rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Stoll has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Thomas Ferguson, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds.
While Whitmire couldn't quite beat the Hornets on Tuesday, the three-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 44-point loss they were dealt on Friday. Whitmire fell just short of the Hornets by a score of 37-34. Whitmire has struggled against the Hornets recently, as their contest on Tuesday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Dixie pushed their record up to 16-4 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.0 points per game. As for Whitmire, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 11 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Dixie against the Wolverines in their previous matchup back in January as the squad secured a 57-26 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Dixie since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
