Basketball Recap: Celine Cantu's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Pettus over Refugio

Pettus was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They fell 58-48 to the Refugio Bobcats. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1213th, while the Bobcats are ranked 562nd).

Pettus lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Celine Cantu, who posted 13 points and seven steals. Cantu has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Hayleigh Cruz was another key player, putting up 17 points and three steals.

Refugio found their leader in freshman Laken Cancino, who put up 29 points and five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Cancino has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cedie Wills, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds.

Pettus' loss dropped their record down to 5-10. As for Refugio, they pushed their record up to 14-3 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

Pettus will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Woodsboro at 1:00 p.m. on December 31st. Refugio and San Diego will round out the year against one another at at 2:40 p.m. on December 27th.
