Softball Recap: Martinsburg Comes Up Short

Martinsburg had lost nine straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 3-14 to make it ten. They came up short against the Hancock Panthers, falling 12-5. The Bulldogs were not able to make up for their defeat to the Panthers from their previous meeting back in April of 2019.

Daysha Cook was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Malayja Williams, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

As for Hancock, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-5. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games.

On Hancock's side, Brooklyn McCusker made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk). McCusker has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, Hancock got a massive performance out of Makensie Boyer, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Boyer is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Kaybree Souders was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with four RBI.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Martinsburg beat Hancock by a score of 11-0 later that day.
