Recap: Smithfield-Selma Spartans vs. Southern Wayne Saints

The Smithfield-Selma Spartans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their 12th straight defeat. They took a 51-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of Southern Wayne. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Smithfield-Selma in their matchups with Southern Wayne: they've now lost four in a row.

Smithfield-Selma's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jacob Stewart, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds. Stewart hasn't dropped below two blocks for five straight games. Another player making a difference was Dalvin Richardson, who scored 11 points along with five steals.

Southern Wayne got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jayden Hardy out in front who dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds. Demetrius Elliot was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with two steals.

Smithfield-Selma's loss was their seventh straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-17. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.7 points per game. As for Southern Wayne, their win ended a seven-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-14.

Smithfield-Selma will square off against C.B. Aycock at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Southern Wayne, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Fike at 7:30 p.m. Hopefully Fike focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Friday.
