Basketball Recap: Sophia Vanslooten and Kendell Skiver Secure Win for Ottawa Hills

Ottawa Hills won the last time they faced Gibsonburg and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Ottawa Hills Green Bears walked away with a 58-51 win over the Gibsonburg Golden Bears. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Green Bears.

Leading Ottawa Hills to victory were Kendell Skiver and Sophia Vanslooten. Skiver almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine boards, while Vanslooten went 6 of 12 on her way to 18 points and seven assists. What's more, Vanslooten also racked up two blocks, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Lily Berenzweig was another key player, putting up seven points along with ten rebounds and five assists.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Ottawa Hills was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Despite the defeat, Gibsonburg saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Elly Evarts posted 32 points in addition to eight steals and six boards. The contest was Evarts' sixth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ansley Fleming, who put up 11 points and three steals.

Ottawa Hills' victory bumped their record up to 13-9. As for Gibsonburg, the loss snapped their winning streak at seven games and leaves them with a 15-5 record.

Ottawa Hills will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Montpelier at 1:00 p.m. on February 15th. As for Gibsonburg, they will face off against St. Mary Central Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gibsonburg is facing St. Mary Central Catholic at the right time seeing as St. Mary Central Catholic is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
