Preview: Woodmont Wildcats vs. Mauldin Mavericks

Woodmont is 0-7 against Mauldin since September of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Woodmont Wildcats will head out on the road to face off against the Mauldin Mavericks at 7:30 p.m. The pair have had a bumpy ride up to this point with four consecutive losses for Woodmont and ten for Mauldin dating back to last season.

Last Friday, Woodmont was beaten by T.L. Hanna 64-25. Woodmont was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-13.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Jordan Sink, who rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 152 yards and a touchdown. Tre Broughton was in the mix too, providing Woodmont with two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Mauldin fell victim to Hillcrest's stalwart defense on Friday and couldn't make it onto the board. They were outmatched by the Rams at home and fell 57-0. While losing is never fun, Mauldin can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 106th, while Hillcrest is ranked ninth).

Woodmont's defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their overall record down to 4-5. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 8-1 Hillcrest and 7-2 J.L. Mann (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 75.3% over those games). As for Mauldin, their loss dropped their record down to 0-9.

Woodmont took a serious blow against Mauldin in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 42-7. Thankfully for Woodmont, Kelvin Johnson (who rushed for 119 yards and four touchdowns on only six carries) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
