Breaking down high school basketball's transfer train

With record numbers of college basketball players switching schools this offseason, perhaps it's no surprise that high school prospects are following suit in waves.

The most highly-touted star on the move this fall is 6-foot-6 Michigan wing James Young, a five-star talent ranked No. 6 in the MaxPreps Class of 2013 Top 100. The news broke Tuesday that the uncommitted senior will be leaving Troy for nearby Rochester (Rochester Hills).

Young is one of 20 Class of 2013 Top 100 prospects who will be at new schools this fall – and the trend isn't limited to the rising senior class. Over a dozen elite 2014 players are on the move, as well.

As expected, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) and Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) were among the winners in the talent acquisition game. Defending Academy national champs Oak Hill will welcome a trio of Top 100 players to the program in No. 34 Troy Williams (6-6, 195, SF), No. 53 Sindarius Thornwell (6-4, 200, SG/SF) and No. 78 Nate Britt (6-1, 170, PG).

Findlay Prep has a pair of Top 100 guards of its own en route with No. 43 Allerik Freeman (6-3, 195, SG) and No. 90 Stanford Robinson (6-4, 190, SG/SF), an Indiana verbal commitment. The Pilots also add a third talented senior in Gavin Schilling (6-9, 215, PF).



Deion Sanders' first-year charter school, Prime Prep (Dallas), wasted no time loading up the roster. Prime staged a hostile takeover of powerhouse Grace Prep, luring away head coach Ray Forsett, Top 100 senior forwards Karviar Shepherd (6-9, 225) and Jordan Mickey (6-7, 210), as well as five-star junior guard Emmanuel Mudiay (6-3, 190).

Georgia public school and defending Class AAAAA state champ Milton made waves with a quartet of transfers headlined by Top 100 2014 point guard Johnnie Vassar, who is on his third school in as many years.

L.J. Peak, a Top 100 2014 wing formerly of Gaffney, S.C., made a long-distance jump to Chicago Public Schools charter Whitney Young. Peak's relocation could help the Dolphins close the gap with rival Simeon – who also gained a couple of high-profile transfers and likely cemented its preseason national No. 1 status.
