Lafayette (Oxford, Miss.)'s advantage, which at one point stood at 18 points, dwindled to nine before the final whistle blew on a 22-13 victory over
Lewisburg (Olive Branch, Miss.).
After taking the lead on a
Brandon Mack touchdown pass to
Tavon Joiner in the first quarter, the Commodores led 14-3 at the half.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 11 entering the fourth.
The loss snapped the Patriots' 5-game winning streak.
Lafayette's most effective player was Mack. The senior threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored seven touchdowns on the season.
Matt Bratton played well for Lewisburg. The senior kicked two field goals and one extra point.
The Olive Branch school's lone touchdown came on a 42-yard pass from
D.J. Steakley to
Xavier Morris in the third quarter.
The Oxford school went into the matchup giving up only 8.8 points per game. The Patriots' 13 points were well below their season average of 36.7 per game.
A 42-0 Lafayette victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The loss comes after Lewisburg defeated Byhalia 35-14 last week. With the win Lafayette extended its winning streak to four games.
In a 4A Region 2 game next week Lewisburg (5-2) takes on Senatobia, and Lafayette (6-1) will go up against Rosa Fort also in a 4A Region 2 game.
