Baseball Game Preview: Westview Wolverines vs. Escondido Cougars

The Westview Wolverines are taking a road trip to face off against the Escondido Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Westview sitting on five straight victories and Escondido on three.

Westview barely beat San Dieguito Academy the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Westview blew past San Dieguito Academy 10-2 on Tuesday. While the Wolverines didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Westview let Mahir Desai and Dimitri Sidiropoulos run wild. Desai scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3, while Sidiropoulos went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Those two runs gave Sidiropoulos a new career-high. Owynn Negado was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Escondido won against Mission Vista on Tuesday with ten runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. Escondido's pitchers stepped up to hand Olympian a 10-0 shutout. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by seven runs or more this season.

Westview pushed their record up to 6-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Escondido, their win bumped their record up to 7-1.

Westview was able to grind out a solid victory over Escondido in their previous matchup back in March of 2015, winning 15-11. The rematch might be a little tougher for Westview since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
