Baseball Recap: Whitman Snaps Eight-Game Streak of Wins at Home

Whitman dropped their record down to 9-3 on Thursday, which also ended the team's eight-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Damascus Hornets. The Vikings were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Whitman got a good showing from Wells Twining, who struck out six batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits.

At the plate, Whitman saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Puck Gardiner, who went 1-for-2 with one run.

As for Damascus, the victory (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 15-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.

On Damascus' side, Will Heyse looked comfortable as he tossed 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Heyse has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Cam Wilberding, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Raffaele Iorio, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Whitman and Damascus should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Maryland Rankings. The Vikings will take on Clarksburg on Saturday with a big rank advantage (15 vs. 144). Meanwhile, Damascus (ranked 20th) will meet Rockville (ranked 180th) at 5:15 p.m. on Monday.
