Football Recap: Independence Takes a Loss

Independence extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to ten on Friday, dropping them down to 0-5. They were beaten by the Liberty Redhawks 63-35. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Independence's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Jeremy Thompson, who gained 198 total yards and a touchdown, and Jack O'Connor, who threw for 220 yards and one touchdown.

Even if they lost, Independence's defensive line still kept up the pressure with seven sacks. It was truly a group effort as Rhoads Reese, Clint Strobel, and Gianni Giannetta picked up two apiece. Another thorn in Liberty's side was Casen Roberts, who picked up a sack and made six total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Liberty's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory they have posted against Independence since September 11, 2015.

Brody Schramek had a dynamite game, rushing for 291 yards on only seven carries, while also picking up 34 receiving yards. He really tore up the turf during one magnificent 78-yard run. Another player making a difference was Khi Bunting, who threw for 195 yards and three TDs while completing 85.7% of his passes.

Independence has already played their next contest, a 63-7 loss against Anna on the 2nd. As for Liberty, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 28-7 defeat against Emerson on the 3rd.
