Softball Recap: Elgin Comes Up Short

Elgin extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to ten on Friday, dropping them down to 0-7. They lost 12-1 to the Wheeling Wildcats. The Maroons were not able to make up for their loss to the Wildcats from their previous meeting back in April of 2025.

As for Wheeling, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games.

For Wheeling's part, Olivia Aquino was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). Aquino has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Caitlyn Fitzgerald was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Alaina Costello was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three runs and one double.

Coming up, Elgin will face off against Larkin at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Maroons' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Royals have averaged an impressive 8.9 runs per game this season. As for Wheeling, they are taking a road trip to challenge Highland Park at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
