Preview: Troy Flying Horses vs. Columbia Blue Devils
The Troy Flying Horses will head out on the road to square off against the Columbia Blue Devils at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Troy is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
Troy pushed their score all the way to 56 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They received a tough blow as they fell 72-56 to Niskayuna. While losing is never fun, Troy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 481st, while the Silver Warriors are ranked 28th).
Despite the defeat, Troy saw an underclassman step up: Stetson Merritt scored 31 points. That was a full 55.4% of Troy's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Legend Merritt, who scored 13 points.
Meanwhile, Columbia pushed their score all the way to 60 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. The match between them and Albany wasn't particularly close, with Columbia falling 75-60. Columbia has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Troy has not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last nine matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-14 record this season. As for Columbia, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-10.
Troy came up short against the Blue Devils in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 60-55. Can Troy avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
