Basketball Recap: Animas Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Laikyn Davenport and Journey Sheehan

Animas has relied on a stalwart defense averaging 28.14 points allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Saturday. The contest between them and the Cliff Cowboys/Cowgirls didn't end well, with the Animas Panthers falling 59-43. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 68th, while the Cowboys/Cowgirls are ranked 18th).

Animas' loss came despite strong showings from Journey Sheehan and Laikyn Davenport. Sheehan almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds, while Davenport posted 19 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Sheehan a new career-high in assists (three).

Even though they lost, Animas smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

Animas' loss dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Cliff, the win keeps them at an undefeated 6-0.

Animas will be playing in front of their home fans against Cobre at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Cliff, they will head out on the road to square off against Hondo Valley at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
