Robstown hasn't had much luck against Calallen recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Robstown Cottonpickers will welcome the Calallen Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Robstown took a loss when they played away from home last Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Zapata with a sharp 15-5 win.
Karina Trevino was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance gave her a new career-low in hits. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Ariel Flores was a standout: she scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Olivia Morales was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
Robstown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Calallen). They never let Zapata get on the board and left with a 17-0 victory on Tuesday. Winning may never get old, but the Wildcats sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.
Like Robstown, Calallen also got a great game from a two-way player: Jordyn Thibodeaux. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. Thibodeaux has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in doubles.
In other batting news, Kiana Vargas was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brookelynn Meador, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one triple.
Calallen pushed their record up to 18-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Robstown, their victory bumped their record up to 11-5.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Robstown has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .469. However, it's not like Calallen struggles in that department as they've averaged .442. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
