Manuel Marquez made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Sun Valley Magnet is 6-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-4 otherwise. Marquez was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He has been hot for a while, having posted at least one stolen base the last nine times he's played.
In other batting news, Leonard Chavez Jr. was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Sun Valley Magnet is undefeated when Chavez Jr. posts two or more stolen bases, but 5-6 otherwise. Joaquin Cadena also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Chavez hadn't done well against Monroe recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Eagles had just enough and edged out the Vikings 3-2.
Ivan Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Cameron Cordon, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Brandon Zazueta, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.
Sun Valley Magnet's record now sits at 8-6. As for Chavez, their record is now 12-8.
Sun Valley Magnet might still be hurting after the 18-2 defeat they got from Chavez in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Pioneers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
