Baseball Game Preview: Monument Valley Mustangs vs. Holbrook Roadrunners

Monument Valley is 0-8 against Holbrook since April of 2017 but things could change on Saturday. The Mustangs will look to defend their home field against the Roadrunners at 11:00 a.m.

Monument Valley fell victim to Page and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 9-0 to the Sand Devils. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Holbrook, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They came out on top against Joseph City on Thursday by a score of 10-4 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The win was some much needed relief for the Roadrunners as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Baler Reidhead and Justin Maestas were a major factor no matter where they played. Throwing, Reidhead struck out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Meanwhile, Maestas pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Reidhead has become a key player for Holbrook: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-9 otherwise. At bat, Reidhead went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Maestas scored four runs and stole four bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits Maestas has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Matthias Montijo was excellent, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Holbrook is 4-2 when Montijo posts two or more runs, but 3-8 otherwise. Tilden Larson also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Holbrook's victory bumped their record up to 7-10. As for Monument Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-10.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Monument Valley has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Holbrook struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Monument Valley suffered a grim 25-10 defeat to Holbrook when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
