Basketball Recap: Mallori Mccolley's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Harrison over Lafayette Jefferson

Harrison dropped down to 4-5 on Tuesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell 47-41 to the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos. While losing is never fun, the Raiders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 164th, while the Bronchos are ranked 16th).

Several Raiders players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mallori McColley, who posted nine points and five steals. McColley is becoming a predictor of Harrison's success: when she posts at least five steals the team is 2-1 (and 2-4 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Aleah Szymanski, who put up 13 points and five boards.

As for Lafayette Jefferson, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 7-1. The 47-point effort marked their lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Maya Layton continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, shooting 47% from the field to rack up 22 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in each of the last seven games she's played. Another player making a difference was Niyah Johnson, who scored seven points.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Harrison will venture away from home to take on Terre Haute South Vigo at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. As for Lafayette Jefferson, they will head out to square off against Clinton Prairie at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
