Softball Recap: Vanguard Comes Up Short

Vanguard fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against South Sumter on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the South Sumter Raiders by a score of 8-7. If the Knights were looking for revenge after losing 2-1 to the Raiders when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Hannah Davis spent all 8.1 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and four unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Destiny Horcajo made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Alivia Vance was another key player, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while going 1-for-4.

Vanguard's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for South Sumter, their record is now 6-3.

Vanguard will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on South Sumter at 7:00 p.m. on March 25th. As for South Sumter, they will venture away from home to challenge Citrus at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Citrus is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
