Basketball Recap: Ocracoke Dolphins vs. Mattamuskeet Lakers
The Ocracoke Dolphins's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their seventh straight loss. They fell 37-26 to Mattamuskeet. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Ocracoke of the 32-28 defeat they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2023.
Ocracoke's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Heidy Lora, who scored 15 points. It was the first time this season that Lora scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jami Martinez, who scored nine points.
It was another big night for Kensley Cox, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten rebounds for Mattamuskeet. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which Cox has scored at least a third of Mattamuskeet's points. Another player making a difference was Mariah Mccoy, who scored two points along with 13 rebounds.
Ocracoke dropped their record down to 1-13 with that defeat, which was their seventh straight at home. As for Mattamuskeet, their win ended a 15-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-11.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Ocracoke will take on the Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Mattamuskeet, they will be playing at home against the Raiders at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Pungo Christian Academy presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Lakers in North Carolina (the Raiders are ranked 247th, while the Lakers are ranked 588th).
