Basketball Recap: Leake County Snaps Three-Game Streak of Wins on the Road

If Leake County was riding high fresh off their 83-28 takedown of Mount Olive last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Leake County Gators took a 65-50 bruising from the Piney Woods Tornadoes on Monday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Gators of the 65-60 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Leake County lost, don't look at LaTavean Fortune. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 13 en route to 18 points. The match was Fortune's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Davion Towsend was another key player, putting up seven points.

Piney Woods got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kemet Ziem out in front who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 15 rebounds. Ziem is crushing it when it comes to boards: he's pulled down at least ten every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jayden Banyi, who went 9 of 18 on his way to 20 points and five assists.

Leake County's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-8. As for Piney Woods, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-3.

Leake County has already played their next contest, an 89-19 win against Mississippi School for the Deaf on the 29th. As for Piney Woods, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 0-0 victory against Taylorsville on the 30th.
