Football Recap: West Mesa Mustangs vs. St. Pius X Sartans

West Mesa gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Saturday. They enjoyed a cozy 48-29 victory over the St. Pius X Sartans. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Mustangs also won the last time the pair played back in August of 2017.

Jamari Woods was nothing short of spectacular: he rushed for 243 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 12.8 yards per carry. Ronnie Gilletti was another key player, rushing for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, West Mesa was moving up and down the field and finished the game with 519 total yards. That's the most total yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.

West Mesa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Treyvon Sargent and Sajon Thompson.

When it comes to explaining why St. Pius X lost, one person who can't be blamed is Hershul Olloway Jr.. Despite the final result, he rushed for 262 yards and four touchdowns on only 15 carries. Olloway Jr. really tore up the turf during one magnificent 87-yard run.

West Mesa will venture away from home to take on Mayfield at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for St. Pius X, they will take on Grants at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. St. Pius X is looking for their season?s first win.
