Basketball Recap: Seminole Ridge Comes Up Short

Seminole Ridge was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 57-51 heartbreaker at the hands of the Spanish River Sharks. The Hawks lost against the Sharks in their previous head to head back in January of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 79-50 score last time.

Defeat or not, Seminole Ridge got some senior leadership from Alejandro Alava and Jonah Pio. Alava posted 13 points and five boards, while Pio went 5 of 10 on his way to 13 points. That's the most rebounds Alava has posted since back in November of 2024. Matthew Sroda was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Even though they lost, Seminole Ridge was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive contests.

Devan Degiuseppe continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Spanish River, scoring 22 points and five boards. That makes it five consecutive games in which Degiuseppe has scored at least a third of Spanish River's points. Another player making a difference was Edens Dortelus, who earned nine points and six rebounds.

Seminole Ridge's loss dropped their record down to 2-15. As for Spanish River, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 6-8 record this season.

Seminole Ridge will head out to face off against Dr. Joaquin Garcia at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Spanish River, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Boca Raton at 7:00 p.m. The timing is sure in Spanish River's favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while Boca Raton has been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
