Preview: Athens Indians vs. Springport Spartans
Athens has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will challenge the Springport Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Thursday, Athens didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Burr Oak, but they still walked away with a 35-31 win.
In what's become a running theme this season, Springport gave their fans yet another huge win on Tuesday. They blew past Maple Valley 73-3 on the road. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest victory Springport has managed all season.
Springport's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Brenna Crittenden, who scored 16 points along with seven steals, and Maddux Locke, who dropped a triple-double on 16 points, 11 assists, and 12 steals. Locke is absolutely dominating the point category: she's posted at least 15 every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Hope Overweg, who scored seven points along with 15 rebounds.
Athens' victory bumped their record up to 3-4. As for Springport, their victory was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-1.
Athens ended up a good deal behind Springport in their previous meeting back in February of 2017, losing 40-21. Can Athens avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
