Basketball Recap: Zuni's Win on Saturday Extends Winning Streak to Two

Thoreau came into Saturday's match looking for another win against Zuni, but Ty'Shawn Nieto wouldn't allow it. The Zuni Thunderbirds came out on top against the Thoreau Hawks by a score of 58-50 on Saturday thanks to Nieto, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds. He also grabbed five steals, which is notable because Zuni is 5-2 when he posts at least three steals, but 8-9 otherwise.

Mason Bobelu was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with nine points and nine boards. Those nine rebounds gave him a new career-high.

Several Hawks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Stetson Perry, who posted 16 points along with eight boards and four steals. Perry's afternoon made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Shirley, who put up eight points and seven rebounds.

The win made it two in a row for Zuni and bumps their season record up to 13-11. As for Thoreau, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-12 record this season.

Zuni didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 49-41 victory against Newcomb on the 19th. As for Thoreau, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 66-55 win against Wingate on the 19th.
