There have been many excellent high school girls basketball coaches in Vermont, but not many have accomplished as much as South Burlington’s Sheila Burleigh has.
Burleigh became the third girls basketball coach in state history to collect 500 victories when South Burlington beat Colchester, 44-22, Tuesday night.
“My blood pressure is high after that game,” Burleigh told the Burlington Free Press. “I was just happy to get through that.”
Burleigh has a 500-255 record in 35 seasons as a head coach.
Jean Robinson, who coached at Burlington and Essex, and former Oxbow coach Mona Garone are the other Vermont girls basketball coaches who reached 500 wins.
“It means I’m in very good company,” Burleigh said. “You’re watching these people: ‘Wow, they’re really good. Someday I’d like to get there.’ It’s kind of nice to reach that milestone.”
Boys Basketball: Rebeor, White Set Records
Seth Rebeor became the all-time leading scorer in BFA-Fairfax boys basketball history when he scored 27 points during a 61-52 victory over Stowe on Friday night.
John Paul Marriott held the previous record of 1,226 points, which was established in 2004. Rebeor entered the game with 1,206 points.
Cheryl Gates owns is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,306 points. Seven BFA-Fairfax players, five boys and two girls, have scored at least 1,000 points.
• Grant White scored 30 points and became Springfield’s all-time leading scorer when the Cosmos defeated Woodstock, 63-52, Saturday.
White, a senior, has scored 1,442 points during his high school career. Greg Birsky held the school’s previous scoring record, which was 1,436 points. Birsky graduated in 1977.
White has scored at least 30 points four times this season and is averaging 26.4 points per game.
• Elsewhere last week, Rutland’s Mark Comstock entered Thursday’s game against Brattleboro 18 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau and collected 23 points in his team’s 60-58 victory.
Girls Basketball: Gleason, Johnson, Scrubb Reach Milestones
Maria Gleason collected the 1,000th point of her career to help Enosburg set a school record for points in a game when it beat Canaan, 95-35, Friday night.
Gleason entered the game with 997 points. She finished the contest with 26 points - including five 3-pointers – and 11 steals. Enosburg raised its record to 14-2.
Lindsey Larivee, Gleason’s teammate, made four 3-pointers and scored 24 points. Larivee scored the 1,000th point of her career earlier this season.
• The parade of 1,000-point scorers continued Friday when BFA-St. Albans forward Tiffany Johnson scored her 1,000th point in a 56-42 triumph over Burlington.
Johnson had 14 points and 16 rebounds in the victory. She became the seventh player in school history to reach the milestone and the fifth member of her family to score at least 1,000 points at the high school level.
Glen Johnson, Tiffany’s father and current coach, was also a 1,000-point scorer.
• Earlier in the week, Williamstown overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to beat Stowe, 50-46, in what was still a memorable night for Stowe’s Julia Scrubb.
Scrubb’s 29 points gained her entrance into the 1,000-point club.
